Prior to entering Bollywood in 1988 Salman Khan at the age of 15-16 (college days)

Salman for parties, said ‘Salman, I don’t think you should waste your time by
spending your father’s money’. Though he said that jokingly, Salman didn’t take that
as a joke and started assisting in films and then he started working as a model as
well. Finally, one fine day Kailash Surendranath offered Salman an advertisement of

Salman Khan biography- Start of Bollywood Journey
Finally, Salman got his first break through in 1988. He was selected to play a support role in film ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’. Film was remake of a Pakistani movie released in 1982. Salman’s voice was dubbed by someone else in the movie. Director of the movie was J.K. Bihari. Film cast included Rekha and Farooq Shaikh in lead roles along with Kader Khan, Asrani, Salman Khan and Bindu in support roles. Salman Khan played brother of Farooq Shaikh. Movie collected Rs. 1.3 crore at box office and was a flop.
There is an unknown and very interesting story behind Salman Khan casting in ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’.
Second film of Salman Khan was ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’. Movie was a blockbuster which made Salman a house hold name. Before ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ Salman already had an initial discussion with Sooraj Barjatya on Maine Pyaar Kiya. During promotions of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Salman recalled his early days and informed that he was not the first choice for the lead role in Sooraj Barjatya’s debut directorial, Maine Pyaar Kiya. He was initially keen to cast an established male actor in the now-cult role instead.
Salman said:
“I thought Sooraj would narrate the role of a villager for me. But when he started narrating the script of Maine Pyar Kiya, I realised that he was planning to make a film around my character. For the first time I did not see any Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Kumar Gaurav or Jackie Shroff (the top choice for Bollywood filmmakers at the time) in this film. I saw myself playing the role of Prem. As soon as the story narration was over I cheerfully told him ‘Sooraj, we will make a great film together’. He said, ‘but, Salman I have not signed you yet as we have shortlisted Deepak Tijori and Kunal Goswami’. I thought the movie wouldn’t happen for me and went back to struggling”.
Disheartened young Salman Khan started to search for work again. Meanwhile, director of film ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ J.K. Bihari ji was in search and approached numerous actors, big and small for the role (Salman’s character) but all of them refused it, as they did not like something or the other about the part. He was completely frustrated and one day, while he was at his office, he told his team that the next idiot to walk in would be signed for the film. And that idiot was none other than Salman Khan. Wow! Isn’t it amazing. (This incidence was shared by Salman himself on show Dus Ka Dum).
Salman thought that he was selected for the role because of his good looks and therefore was pumped up during audition. He entered office of Bihariji in full speed and style, not knowing what Bihariji had in his mind.
Here comes the twist, few month later Sooraj Barjatya approached Salman Khan again. Sooraj wanted to cast Salman in the film. Salman informed Sooraj that he has worked in another film named ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ which was almost complete. Sooraj told him that ‘You were damn good in the test thus we changed our decision and want to cast you for Maine Pyar Kiya’.
On completion of ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ , Arbaaz Khan watched first look of the movie and laughed at Salman acting skills. Salman was not at all confident about his acting skills and that night I called up Sooraj and told him to look for another hero as Salman felt that he was not up to the mark. On Sooraj’s insistence, Salman asked the makers to show him Biwi Ho Toh Aisi so that Sooraj could take him off the Maine Pyaar Kiya cast and sign someone else.
Sooraj saw the film and was quiet. Salman Khan’s biggest fear was that many people might see Biwi Ho Toh Aisi and after seeing him in it, they won’t enter the theatre if they saw him on the poster of Maine Pyaar Kiya. Sooraj still showed confidence in him and said ‘You are Prem of Maine Pyar Kiya. What I saw on screen right now is not you.’ He convinced Salman to let this film happen.
At this time Sooraj was just 19 year old. Salman age was also 19 years. Sooraj a 19 year old boy saw something happening in another 19 year old boy and took the risk to cast him. Rajshri banner in this period was going through a dull phase and before Maine Pyar Kiya their highest budget film was of Rs. 40 lakh. Maine Pyar Kiya was made in a whooping cost Rs 1 crore 20 lakh. Rest was the history, the film went on to be the biggest blockbuster of the decade with an earning of Rs. 15 crore. Wasn’t the story worth listening?
